Frequently Asked Questions
Question marks

Can we apply as a team?

Yes! We welcome applications from teams if you are intending to work with colleagues on a project who would also like to join the programme. Individuals should submit their own application form to the programme but indicate on the form that they are applying as part of a team and name their team members (there is space to do so on the form). All team members are expected to engage with the programme sessions and learning.

When will the next cohort start?

You can find out the dates for upcoming cohorts on the Applications Page. We usually start new cohorts in January, May and September but this can vary. If we are not currently accepting applications for a cohort, you can register your interest and you'll be the first to know once we open for applications.

Who reviews applications?

Applications are reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel, including representation from NHS Education for Scotland and the programme sponsor Scottish Government.

How detailed does my application need to be?

You will see that each question on the application form has a word limit. Whilst you do not need to reach this number of words, it gives you an indication of the level of detail required. Please ensure you clearly articulate your motivation in applying for the programme, how you intend this to develop your leadership and how you see this positively impacting your organisation/service. The panel need to understand that the programme is the right fit for you as well as see that you are committed to developing your leadership skills.

Do I need to have a digital project to apply?

A key part of the programme is to identify and implement a digital improvement project in your organisation. However, you are not required to have a firm project at application stage. Please use the application form to indicate your areas of interest or an area where you feel an improvement could be made - you will have the opportunity during the programme to explore this problem space and plan your project.

Will the programme teach me skills such as programming, how to use software packages or how to deliver online learning?

The DLP is first and foremost a leadership programme and is not designed to teach specific technical skills. You may find you need to learn some technical skills in order to deliver your improvement project, but due to the variety of projects on the programme, we are unable to cover all the potential skills you may need so you will need to source this learning outwith the programme.

Do I need advanced IT skills to participate in the DLP?

No, the DLP is primarily a leadership programme. As an aspiring digital leader, we would expect you to have a keen interest in acquiring new IT skills during your leadership journey but digital leadership is so much more than this. It's about all about identifying areas for improvement, being user-centred, delivering change, and bringing people with you on this journey - and technolology is simply an enabler of this rather than a starting point. Your confidence will grow throughout the programme as you learn about subjects such as Quality Improvement, Service Design, Information Governance, Digital Transformation and more.

I am unable to make all of the session dates, can I still apply?

We would ask that you are able to commit to the majority of the session dates as the interactive nature of this programme is key to its success. However, if there are occassional dates where you are unable to attend, you will be able to rewatch the recording. Please note that peer support sessions are not recorded as these are small group discussions.

What is the overall time commitment to the programme?

The estimated learning time is 60 hours which includes session attendance, self-directed learning and working on your projects. You can find a detailed breakdown under Participant Commitment on the homepage.

Will I need to submit a lot of written work?

The focus of the programme is on practical application of your learning so written work is kept to a minimum. We ask for two key submissions during the programme.

1. A project charter using this template

2. A presentation of the progress you have made on your project at the end of the programme. This can be in a format of your choice. Previous submissions can be viewed here

Who will I meet during the programme?

We are extremely fortunate to have a wide variety of expert speakers and facilitators who are currently leading in the digital health and space involved in the programme who you will have the opportunity to meet. You can view some of their profiles here.
