Programme Outline

The programme is a full-time three year programme that leads to a degree in nursing and also registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The programme has been designed in accordance with the NMC Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses.

The programme is offered for different fields of nursing: adult, child and mental health. Students can take the award at bachelor, honours or masters level, depending on their admissions qualifications.

The programme therefore aims to prepare future nurses via contemporary education to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes required to transform lives in a changing global population. Students undertake a mix of practice learning and University based learning, in compliance with NMC requirements. This means that students have an equal allocation of theory and practice. In practice students are allocated placements. Many placements are located within the NHS, but third sector placements are also available, such as care homes.

Each year students have the following learning:

  1. Practice learning through a variety of practice learning experiences
  2. Clinical skills
  3. Shared modules, taken by all students irrespective of the field of nursing practice
  4. Field modules, specific to adult, child or mental health

The content of the modules in the programme has been mapped to the NMC Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses. Students have lectures, small-group and clinical skills lab teaching during their University-based learning, as well as components of the programme that are delivered through online learning.

Students undertake practice placements that comprise 50% of their studies (2300hrs, as per regulatory requirements). In practice placements students are supported by Practice Supervisors and Practice Assessors, who have received preparation for teaching and assessing nursing students. Practice Supervisors provide day-to-day support and guidance, while Practice Assessors monitor student programme and sign off students to progress to the next stage of their studies, working in conjunction with the Academic Assessor.
