Developing HCSW and the team: the masterclass model

Add to favourites

The Masterclass process is one way for teams to maximise the Transforming Roles agenda, and to help ensure that Supoort Workers have clearly structured roles plus the skills, training, tools and time they need to work effectively.

What is the masterclass model?

The experience of healthcare support workers can be mixed. This can cause issues with recruitment and retention and means the NHS is not always making the best of the enthusiasm and potential of a large section of its workforce. The Masterclass process is one way for teams to ensure that Support Workers have clearly structured roles plus the skills, training, tools and time they need to work effectively, whilst also ensuring that registered practitioners are clear around delegation of tasks to HCSWs.

Support Worker Masterclass model

The Support Worker masterclass emphasises the need to:

  • empower teams to innovate and make things better
  • nurture team working and professionalism
  • develop leadership skills and competencies at all levels
  • put new and extended roles into practice
How does the masterclass model work?
Support Worker Masterclass process

The masterclass approach is centred around the HCSW Framework to develop Support Worker roles and maximise their contribution to their teams.

The model originated as a series of face-to-face facilitated sessions and moved to facilitated online sessions during the pandemic.   Typically the masterclass model comprises three facilitated sessions usually held over a 4-6 month period.   The steps are outlined in the visual.

If you would like to know more about the masterclass model or wish to discuss any support you may need with this process, please contact the HCSW team at hcsw@nes.scot.nhs.uk
