Perioperative Practitioners are registered practitioner consolidating pre-registration experience. They have comprehensive, specialised, factual and theoretical knowledge within the perioperative environment. They can use their knowledge to solve problems creatively, make judgements which require analysis and interpretation, and actively contribute to service and self-development.
Example roles include register nurse (RGN), Operating Department Practitioner (ODP), Scrub Practitioner and Anaesthetic Practitioner.
Qualifications
* The HCPC have implemented a change to the minimum education level required to register as an ODP from Diploma to a Degree. The change will come into place by September 2024. More information on these changes can be found below

The NHS Scotland Academy offers accelerated workforce programmes for people working in the perioperative environment. These include programmes for Anaesthetic Practitioners and the Foundations of Perioperative Practice
The University of the West of Scotland (UWS) offers a Diploma of Higher Education Operating Practice
The Career Development Framework for the Perioperative Nursing, Midwifery and Health Professions (NMaHP) Workforce aims to provide an infrastructure to support the career development, and the learning and development needs of perioperative workforce. This framework is underpinned by the Career Framework for Health.
TURAS Professional Portfolio is NHS Education for Scotland's e- portfolio application for healthcare staff. Portfolio has been designed to allow staff to record and share their learning, reflection, feedback and achievements as part of their career journey in NHS Scotland.
