These videos will provide knowledge surrounding the communication and behaviour skills that can be used to help provide oral care for residents living with dementia. It is also hoped that the learner will have a better understanding of the challenges faced when providing oral health care to residents living with dementia. The main aim of this training is to reduce the number of stressful situations for both the resident and care giver.
This video provides a training opportunity to discuss ways to support residents who experience stress and distress during mouth care. It was created by carers in NHS Ayrshire & Arran, who acted out the scenarios within the video. And thanks to the team for sharing this resource. These fictional scenarios in no way reflect the care provided or behaviour of staff in the care homes.
Please note:
This training is for anyone delivering care related stress and distress training as part of the wider Caring for Smiles Programme. This can include oral health promotion staff, dental staff, trainers within care homes, or oral health champions within care homes.
This Guidance document provides instructions for using the "Stress and Distress" videos. It offers hints and tips for generating discussion points and guiding conversation at each section of the videos.
While watching these bitezise videos use the guidance doccument to help think about the following:
What do you think about the scenario?
Was there anything wrong with the approaches used?
What did the care staff do well?
Would you have done anything differently?
