PDS Mentoring

Five accompanied domiciliary sessions (over minimum of three weeks)

  • 1 miniCEX
  • 2 DOPS
  • 2 Case-based Discussion (CbD)

Successful completion of all elements. Evidence made available to HBs to support process of designating GDP.

NHS Board

NHS Board to determine areas where enhanced skills practitioners would be best placed to deliver care and identify and recruit suitable willing GDPs to undertake training and service delivery. Identification of mentors within boards*.

Participants directed to supporting information and resources located on Turas Learn platform and ePortfolio

NES course

A hybrid course with a mixture of live interactive online sessions, in-person teaching days and an online learning module to complete. Content includes treatment planning and treating patients with long-term conditions in a domiciliary setting. Topics include dementia, communication, patient assessment, treatment planning and practical treatment delivery including management of patients where the ability to consent may be an issue. The training will incorporate the AWI course for dentists which includes assessment. Participants must have knowledge of the latest AWI legislation and know how to apply this to dentistry so that they are able to sign AWI certificates.

There will be information on the national oral health initiative aimed at dependent older people, ‘Caring for Smiles’ and how this is delivered in the care home, including input from the Care Inspectorate.

PDS mentoring

Each GDP will have a designated mentor in the local PDS. Together they will undertake five sessions of joint care home visits, with follow-up feedback and discussion of cases. A minimum of five Supervised Learning Events (SLEs)  over a minimum period of three weeks will be used to facilitate learning and reflection. The PDS mentor to support participant with the case presentation which is part of the AWI element of training. Contact with PDS mentor for advice and support for agreed period of time via 1:1 meetings, telephone discussions, etc.

The evidence for learning will be recorded in an ePortfolio sited within Turas.

Following completion of training

NHS Board

The participant’s e-portfolio will be made available and evidence assessed by the relevant NHS Board reviewer prior to enhanced skills listing. Roll-out to be monitored with PSD.

NES

Analysis of evaluation of training. Continuing access to relevant supporting resources within Turas Learn.

Offer relevant CPD courses as updates.

PDS

NHS Board PDS domiciliary care clinical contact for ongoing advice, discussion of treatment options and/or need for referral. Local domiciliary referral protocols produced for timely assessment and appropriate referral and clarity over shared care arrangements.
