Patient reported outcome measure (PROM)

The Patient Reported Outcome Measure (PROM) provides service users with the opportunity to evaluate the kind of support chaplains offer.

Background

In 2010, the first steps were taken to design a questionnaire or PROM (Patient Reported Outcome Measure) intended to provide service users with the opportunity to evaluate the kind of support chaplains offer.  This research, to ‘capture the patient voice’, has been through several iterations, with data captured through various studies in Community Chaplaincy Listening (CCL), suggesting that “being able to talk about what is on my mind”, can be just as effective as traditional prescribing.

Wider use of the PROM, with researchers creating their own studies, has taken the tool into a variety of different healthcare settings, some of which have been overseas.  If you would like to use the PROM to assist with your research study you should note that you will be required to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), see process below.   Should you wish to use the PROM only for a patient survey an MoU is not required.  However, you do still need to ask for permission from NES to do so.

In such instances, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), intended as a broad framework document for collaboration, is signed between NES and the governing body overseeing the research project.  The Intellectual Property rights of the PROM remain the property of NHS Education for Scotland who, along with the MoU, grant a licence to use the PROM.

Process for use of PROM outside Scotland
  • organisations must enter into agreement with NHS Education for Scotland by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). An example of this can be downloaded here to let you see what you need to sign up to before gaining access to the PROM tool
  • if you are happy to enter into this agreement please mail nes.spiritualcare@nhs.scot with the details of the study you are undertaking for which you wish to use the PROM tool, providing contact details for the lead person
  • NES will then draft the MoU with the information you have provided and send it to you for confirmation or to clarify any issues
  • once these steps have been taken NES will sign the MoU and send it to you for signature. Thereafter the PROM tool will be sent to you for use
