Inhalation Sedation : training for dental core trainees (DCT). One full day of in-person teaching and attendance at a Managing Medical Emergencies (MME) study day, also in-person. This will be followed by practical training which will take place in the trainee’s health board placement with supervision provided by a suitably qualified clinician.
The DCT has access to this course at the appropriate date and time when employed in the public dental service (PDS).
Prerequisites:
Employed as a Dental Core Trainee (DCT) in a Public Dental Service post in Scotland.
Learning aims:
To provide participants with essential information on current conscious sedation practice
To ensure that their developing practice is underpinned by a strong foundation of knowledge and that they are able to apply the Conscious Sedation in Dentistry SEDCEP 2017 guidance to their practice to ensure quality of care and patient safety at all times
This course is designed as an introductory module to the practical skills training which will be delivered within the trainees clinical setting
Learning outcomes:
Discuss the practice of conscious sedation within dental services and the implications of the Conscious Sedation in Dentistry SDCEP guidance 2017
Discuss the complexities of obtaining consent within the context of the Public Dental Service and apply local guidelines and legislation to practice
Provide a thorough assessment of the patient in relation to managing dental anxiety and select the most appropriate modality of treatment
Critically evaluate the range of conscious sedation techniques available
Ensure a safe sedation environment at all times
Apply the principles of safe sedation practice when treating patients including perioperative care
