Programme introduction/Aims and objectives

To ensure parity and equity of access to outpatient respiratory services across NHS Scotland. The MPPP Respiratory speciality group aims to:

  • Connect respiratory teams from each Health Board area
  • Share best practice
  • Identify innovation
  • Support test of change projects and upscale where feasible.

Key activities

MPPP respiratory workstream has currently provided funding to several test of change projects across NHS Scotland, which shall continue throughout 2021. These projects include:

  • Cough Pathway redesign
  • Near patient home oxygen assessment
  • Remotely delivered spirometry
  • GP Cluster spirometry
  • Psychological support for complex respiratory patients
  • Integrated planned care model for palliative patients
  • Respiratory ‘hot clinic’ approach 

In addition, MPPP are engaged in remote health pathway design and implementation projects. This includes facilitation of clinical advisory groups and collaboration with Technology Enabled Care Team in the design and implementation of a remote health pathways for both Asthma and COPD. On completion, this shall be available to all health boards. MPPP is also supportive of digital innovation projects such as Dynamic-Scot – a next generation monitoring approach for COPD patients, led by DHI and NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde.

Furthermore, MPPP shall be engaging with sleep services across Scotland throughout 2021, in respect to reducing variation in service delivery for obstructive sleep apnoea.
