Better oral care for dependent older people

Resources

Caring for Smiles is Scotland's national oral health promotion, training and support programme, which aims to improve the oral health of older people, particularly those living in care homes.

The Caring for Smiles training award has two levels:

Foundation is credit rated at SCQF Level 5 with 2 Notional credit points.  It covers the importance of every day oral care, with a practical session including introduction to risk assessment, care planning daily documentation and referral.

Staff require to successfully complete the Foundation level before undertaking the Intermediate level.

Intermediate is credit rated at SCQF Level 6 with 2 Notional credit points.  It re-iterates the importance of daily oral care, focussing on dementia skills, palliative care, and end of life care with a practical focus on risk assessment and documentation.
