Operational Physiotherapy team, a Scottish health & social care partnership
When the new manager came into post, the team had already gone through change in structure and were at the stage of reflecting on this. The team was a newly formed team consisting of highly specialist physiotherapy leads and manager.
The Team Manager and I met to discuss what outcomes were required and which intervention would best support the achievement of these outcomes.
The OD Facilitator met with the manager and the team members to discuss and explain the Affina Team Journey (ATJ) and the 10 stage process. It was important to meet with the team members to ensure they understood the process, the benefits of undertaking the ATJ, answer any questions they may have and also to ensure their committed to progress the Affina Team Journey with the support of an Affina Coach. The team were eager to progress with the journey as they felt that is would allow them, as a team, to move forward and become an effective, functioning team.
It was decided that the Affina Team Journey would be beneficial as the team was a new team that required to engage with each other and move forward. There are 10 stages to the ATJ:-
1. Engage – plan for your journey
2. Assess team effectiveness – team complete the Affina Real Team Profile + (ARTP+) questionnaire. This then produces the team’s ARTP+ report which forms the basis of the ATJ.
3. Confirm team identity
4. Agree team objectives
5. Increase role clarity
6. Improve decision making
7. Maintain effective team communication
8. Increase constructive debate
9. Improve inter-team working
10. Reassess team effectiveness - ARTP+
The ARTP+ questionnaire was used at the beginning of the ATJ and again one more time throughout their journey. This allowed the manager and team, supported by the Affina coach to look at the impact the journey had. This gave them information relating to what had improved and to look at what needed more work.
