NHS Research Scotland

NHS Research Scotland promotes and supports excellence in clinical and translational research in Scotland so that patients can benefit from new and better treatments. Their vision is to place Scotland at the international forefront of clinical research. They aim to make a positive difference to patient’s health within Scotland, the UK and internationally. NHS Research Scotland is committed to strengthening the research culture in Scotland through education and research.

Their site contains online learning, courses and seminars and information on funding sources.

National Institute for Health Research

National Institute for Health Research was established in 2006 under the government’s health research strategy and is the nation’s largest funder of health and care research. They provide the people, facilities and technology that enables research to thrive. They have transformed research in and for the NHS and helped to shape the health research landscape more broadly. They work in partnership with the NHS, universities, local government, other research funders, patients and the public to deliver and enable world-class research that transforms people’s lives, promotes economic growth and advances science.

NIHR Learn contains free, accredited learning programmes. On this site they offer a range of courses to develop your knowledge of clinical research and support you to do what you do best. Their programmes have been developed by international leaders from the clinical research field and are available to anyone directly employed by the NHS, UK universities and other publicly funded organisations conducting and supporting clinical research.

Medical Research Council

The Medical Research Council (MRC) is part of UK Research and Innovation.

The MRC’s mission is to:

  • encourage and support research to improve human health
  • produce skilled researchers
  • advance and disseminate knowledge and technology to improve the quality of life and economic competitiveness of the UK
  • promote dialogue with the public about medical research.

On the MRC Regulatory Support Centre's resources you can access e-learning; view upcoming training courses; and test your knowledge. Training resources on Good scientific practice, GDPR, research, and human tissue legislation are contained within this site.

UK Clinical Research Collaboration

The UK Clinical Research Collaboration brings together the NHS, research funders, industry, regulatory bodies, Royal Colleges, patient groups and academia in a UK-wide environment that facilitates and promotes high quality clinical research for the benefit of patients.

The UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC) Partners' goal is to establish the UK as a world leader in clinical research. The UKCRC provides a forum that enables all Partners to work together to transform the clinical research environment in the UK.

The forum promotes a strategic approach to the identification of opportunities and obstacles to clinical research and their resolution. In so doing the UKCRC aims to benefit the public and patients by improving national health and increasing national wealth.

Publications including slide presentations of the work of the UKCRC is available on their site.

Medical Research Scotland

Medical Research Scotland is an independent Scottish charity, run by Trustees. Medical Research Scotland is committed to encouraging and supporting promising individuals at the start of their medical research careers, principally through the award of doctoral studentships but also through support for undergraduates and scientists returning after a career break.

Their grants support research that aims to improve health in Scotland in three ways: by improving the diagnosis, treatment or prevention of diseases; by understanding basic disease processes; and by development of medical technologies. They are not restricted to funding research into any one disease or condition, nor are they restricted to funding in any specific subject or academic discipline.

They have a dedicated events page which displays the details of upcoming and past events.
