Vision

Successful leadership starts with a clear vision. It focuses our attention so we can prioritise what matters most, enabling us to solve current problems, set goals and implement plans that take our organisation forwards into the future.

Vision defines the organisation as it would appear in a future successful state.

One example of a vision is the Health & Social Care Vision for Scotland (the 2020 vision); "By 2020 everyone is able to live longer, healthier lives at home or in a homely setting. We will have a healthcare system where we have integrated health and social care, a focus on prevention, anticipation and supported self-management."

To make that vision a reality, we need a direct line of sight between the plans and goals of every individual, team, service, organisation and the vision. Everything we do should support and facilitate the delivery of that vision.

The leadership elements relating to the vision quality are:

  • Seeing how best to make a difference
  • Communication and promoting ownership of the vision
  • Promoting a public service ethos
  • Thinking and planning strategically
