The Scottish Coaching and Leading for Improvement programme is a 4-month Quality Improvement learning programme. It is a development programme for managers who want to: coach and lead teams to improve their services help embed improvement strategies within their organisation.

SCLIP is an interactive, participative programme that uses a blended learning approach. The programme includes a blend of modular-based learning, coaching groups and self-directed learning. Participants are expected to apply coaching and leadership learning to support their teams to use QI. By the end of the programme participant will be able to:



Interpret and differentiate between a range of approaches to support individuals and teams    

Apply coaching skills to support individuals or teams in quality improvement   

Apply facilitation concepts and models to support effective team coaching


Build effective relationships that support team working   

Develop and lead high-performing teams   

Apply theories to lead teams through improvement   

Apply project management tools to lead the delivery of improvement interventions

Explain the improvement science history and the contribution of the key thinkers in QI    

Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Scottish approach to improvement in practice.    

Understand QI tools and techniques to achieve improvement interventions      

Understand and interpret data for improvement    

Describe concepts of testing, implementation and spread  


Participants must apply coaching and leadership to support teams to apply QI. Participants must be willing to share their experiences with other programme participants. This short video explains what SCLIP is all about

SCLIP Delivery

SCLIP is delivered virtually. Places will be distributed across all NHS Boards, and all shortlisting and allocation of places will be done locally.

We are encouraging candidates within a Leadership role working in a Health and Social Care setting that support the Excellence in Care agenda (Excellence in Care) from the following professional backgrounds to apply: 

  • Nursing and Midwifery  
  • Allied Healthcare Professionals  
  • Health Care Scientists 

The Scottish Leading and Coaching for Improvement Programme is a four-month quality improvement learning programme designed to develop individuals who will coach and lead teams, to support achievement of improvement strategies within their organisation.
