Healthcare Improvement Scotland

The aim of the project is to improve the care of patients who are admitted to one ward in the Western General Hospital, NHS Lothian, with diabetes as a secondary condition. By increasing the percentage of appropriately managed hypoglycaemic episodes to 80% by August 2015. 15-20% of inpatients have diabetes1 and, while 4.3% of the Scottish population has diabetes, 12% of Scottish inpatient expenditure is spent on patients with diabetes2. These patients have a longer length of stay for almost all conditions that lead to hospital admission, compared to patients without diabetes3.
