The aim of the project is to improve the care of patients who are admitted to one ward in the Western General Hospital, NHS Lothian, with diabetes as a secondary condition. By increasing the percentage of appropriately managed hypoglycaemic episodes to 80% by August 2015.
15-20% of inpatients have diabetes1 and, while 4.3% of the Scottish population has diabetes, 12% of Scottish inpatient expenditure is spent on patients with diabetes2. These patients have a longer length of stay for almost all conditions that lead to hospital admission, compared to patients without diabetes3.
