Finding statistical data to support your research can feel challenging. This page highlights several great places to explore the data you need. All of the featured resources are freely accessible, ensuring everyone can make use of the available material.

Organisations who provide data relevant to Scotland.


1. Public Health Scotland: one of the official producer of official statistics in Scotland. Material covers many topics including: Conditions & diseases, health & social care, health services, healthcare resources, lifestyle & behaviours and population health.

2. The Scottish Public Health Observatory (ScotPHO): a collaboration of several agencies that aim to provide information on the health of the Scottish population.

3. The Scottish Government section with health and social care statistics.

4. Research Data Scotland: enables access to public sector data for research purposes.

5. The National Records of Scotland: collects and produces reports of many aspects relating to the people and history of Scotland. This includes census and health related data.

6. NHS Research Scotland: a collaboration between NHS Boards within Scotland and the Chief Scientists Office in the Scottish Government. It supports clinical and related research related to treatment in Scotland.

7. Scotland's Census:  looks at many aspects of the population including housing, education and health services.

8. electronic Data Research and Innovation Service (eDRIS): part of Public Health Scotland and  provides a single entry point and support for researchers wishing to access administrative datasets.

9. Scottish Centre for Administrative Data Research (SCADR): analyses data from across the public sector and is part of ADR Scotland.

10. ADR Scotland: is part of ADR UK and is a partnership between the Scottish Government’s Data Sharing and Linkage Unit and the SCADR.

Organisations who provide data relevant to United Kingdom.


1. UK Data Service (UKDS): this service provides a single point of access to a wide range of secondary data including large scale UK and cross-national surveys, longitudinal studies, census data, qualitative/mixed methods data.

2. Office for National Statistics (ONS): ONS publishes a range of economic, social
and population statistics.

3. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) collects and publishes statistics related to planning, preventing and responding to external health threats.

4. The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) collects and publishes statistics on public health topics.

5. NHS Digital Data Sets: the data sets included have been commissioned by NHS England and the Department of Health.

6. Health Data Research Innovation Gateway: this website offers descriptions of health datasets on one website. Researchers need to register for an account and request access to specific datasets. The  custodians of the dataset will then decide if access is granted.

7. Health Data Research UK: this service provides a common entry point to UK Health datasets.

8. ADRUK: Has UK administrative datasets from across the UK

International data

Organisations who provide international data.


1. World Health Organisation Data Collections: highlights a large number of health related databases and data sets. Examples include - maternal and perinatal health, tropical; diseases, immunization, micronutrient data, international clinical trials, disease burden, violence & injury, mortality, vaccination, health information and many more.

2. World Bank Group: A global partnership working for sustainable solutions that reduce poverty and build shared prosperity in developing countries. The platform provides free and open access to global development data.

3. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD): OECD iLibrary gives access to OECD's analysis and data. Not all of the data is free to access and some is also available through the UK Data Service.

4. UNData portal (United Nations Statistics Division): Provides access to statistical resources of the UN, including links to a some partner organisations.

5. Eurostat (Statistical Office of the European Union). Free access to European statistics for users within the EU.

6. Unicef: Data related to children and women across the world.

Sources of statistical data.


1. Google Dataset Search: a search engine from the Google Toolbox that sources data from a variety of different sources. These include publisher's, digital libraries or author's web page.

2. DataCite:  a global non-profit organisation which gathers metadata from included material to form a large index of research data.  re3data.org is a service within DataCite and searches 2000+ international data repositories.

3. Statista: one of the world’s largest statistics platforms. Has data from 18,000 sources on a variety topics. Includes UK and international data. Users require to register for a basic account (free) which gives access to basic data sets.
