Coming Home Training Guidance

The Coming Home Training Guidance has been developed by the Scottish Government and Cosla as part of the Coming Home Action Plan.

In addition to the foundation skills needed to support people with learning disabilities, this training guide for the health and social care workforce outlines the additional knowledge and skills required by those supporting people with learning disabilities and complex needs.  In particular, the needs of people who engage in behaviour perceived as challenging and who may be at risk of placement breakdown or delayed discharge are considered.

Coming Home Training Guidance

The Coming Home Training Guide recognises 8 key areas where additional competencies are needed to deliver effective care and support to people with learning disabilities and complex needs. These are:

  • Human rights
  • Communication
  • Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
  • Trauma
  • Physical health needs
  • Reducing restrictive practice
  • Developing enabling environments
  • Co-production

In addition to highlighting why these areas are important, the training guide identifies specific learning and training resources which are beneficial for the development of knowledge and skills in each area, most of which are free to access.

The importance of considering how to translate learning into sustained practice is also highlighted as key to achieve positive outcomes for people with learning disabilities and complex needs.
