Across remote and rural communities, access to affordable accommodation can be a major barrier to recruiting and retaining the staff needed to deliver safe, high‑quality health and social care. On the Isle of Arran, the Health & Social Care Partnership has taken a practical, people‑centred approach to this challenge.
In late 2022, the Partnership purchased Glenartney House — a former guesthouse in Brodick — and transformed it into dedicated short‑term accommodation for staff working on Arran. With 12 bedrooms, shared living spaces, and on‑site facilities including a gym area and laundry, Glenartney provides a comfortable and reliable base for nurses, social care staff, and other members of the multidisciplinary team travelling from the mainland.
The impact has been significant. Running at 80–90% occupancy since opening in 2023, Glenartney has enabled teams to fill essential shifts, strengthened recruitment efforts, and supported safe staffing across the island’s care home, community services, and Lamlash Community Hospital. The house is managed locally by two part‑time housekeepers and overseen by HSCP Business Support.
This video showcases the story behind Glenartney House — the challenge it set out to solve, how it was brought to life, and the difference it is now making for staff and services across Arran.
