Welcome to the Prison Nursing Transforming Roles Framework information page.

The Prison Nursing Transforming Roles Framework describes the knowledge and skills required by prison nurses in Scotland. The framework can be used by individuals developing their current and future practice; organisations reviewing or developing their services for their local populations; and educators supporting achievement of knowledge and skills.

The Transforming Roles Framework is designed with several key objectives in mind:

  • Defining Knowledge and Skills: it articulates the specific knowledge, skills, and behaviours necessary for nurses and HCSWs working in the prison environment. By providing clear and comprehensive descriptions, we aim to support the development of a highly competent and confident workforce.
  • Career Pathways: the framework offers structured career pathways for those working in prison healthcare. By highlighting potential career progression and development opportunities, we seek to attract and retain the workforce.
  • Recruitment and Succession Planning: effective recruitment and succession planning are crucial for maintaining a sustainable workforce. This framework provides guidance on identifying and nurturing future leaders, ensuring that our prison healthcare services remain resilient and adaptive to changing needs.
