The study was concerned with the Human Factors assessment of the COVID-19 vaccination system in Scotland using NHS Ayrshire and Arran as a Case Study. The findings were used to improve the current service delivery and provide guidance for the safe design and delivery of future rollouts of time-critical public health vaccination programmes. Many areas of good practice were revealed and there were areas for improvement in future vaccination programmes. These included equipment and information provision, additional checks and contingencies, and managing expectations (including training and awareness). The use of Human Factors methods is still very limited in healthcare, so this example will be useful as both evidence and guidance for future applied projects, including the design of routine vaccination facilities (e.g. influenza and MMR) known to have patient safety challenges.
