The Chair's Appraisal

Who conducts the appraisal?
Chair appraisals are carried out by the Chief Executive of NHS Scotland / Director General of Health and Social Care, acting on behalf of the Cabinet Secretary for NHS Recovery, Health and Social Care.

Frequency of appraisal
Appraisals take place every 12 to 24 months, with each Chair undergoing appraisal at least twice during a 4-year appointment.

How the process works
Chairs will be contacted by the Office of the Chief Executive of NHS Scotland to arrange a date and receive the necessary paperwork in advance. The appraisal process includes:

A Multi-Rater Feedback Questionnaire (similar to 360-degree feedback)

A formal Appraisal Form
