How to become an SMMDP Faculty Member
Certified SMMDP Faculty Resources
To become a faculty member and teach at Scottish Multiprofessional Maternity Development Programme (SMMDP) courses, this can be achieved by one of the following methods:
To be recognised as having instructor potential (IP)
When attending one of our SMMDP courses, our faculty may recognise instructor potential in you. If recognised, the SMMDP admin team will contact you to inform you of this. If this was something that interests you for development and you are supported by your line manager, you would be booked onto one of our Scottish Generic Instructor Training courses (SGITC). Following successful completion of the SGITC, you would then be required to teach and complete one or two instructor candidate assessment at an SMMDP course. Once successfully completed, you would then be able to teach on SMMDP courses at your health board as SMMDP faculty.
Nomination by your line manager or health board course leader
You can also become an SMMDP faculty member if nominated by the health board course leaders or by your local manager.
SMMDP Instructor Training Courses
There are two types of instructor training courses. The Scottish Generic Instructor Training Course (SGITC) is attended via Microsoft Teams. Once successfully completed, you would then be required to carry out two instructor candidate (IC) assessment sessions.
If you are already a trained instructor with another organisation, e.g. The Resuscitation Council or ALSO, and can deliver a lecture, run skill stations and scenarios then you may only have to complete a two hour ‘bridging’ course and undergo one assessment as an Instructor Candidate to become an SMMDP Instructor.
Please contact SMMDP@nes.scot.nhs.uk if you have any questions.
All SMMDP faculty resources are stored on a dedicated SharePoint site. The SMMDP Faculty Zone was designed specifically for SMMDP faculty use. Any certified member of SMMDP faculty can access all key resources for upcoming courses, such as PowerPoint presentations, course manuals, or videos. There are also links to useful resources or additional SharePoint pages with information relevant to teaching at SMMDP courses.
The SMMDP Faculty Zone is restricted access and can only be accessed via the home page link which will be sent via faculty emails for upcoming courses. Please note that you can only request access via your NHS Microsoft 365 account email address. Personal email accounts are not permitted access to the SMMDP Faculty Zone. The first time you click on the link within the faculty email, you will need to request access. Once this is updated and approved, you will gain access to all relevant files for the upcoming course.
SMMDP Course Leaders also have a dedicated SharePoint site, which has additional documents and resources for course leaders only. This site is also restricted access and course leaders will be given access by the SMMDP Business Support Team.
If you have recently completed a SGITC Instructor Training course or SGITC Instructor Training (Bridging) course, you will be required to complete your IC Assessment. If you completed the full SGITC course, you will be required to complete two successful IC Assessments. If you completed the SGITC Bridging, you will be required to complete only one successful IC Assessment.
To book onto your IC Assessment at an upcoming course, please check the Course Calendar for available courses scheduled in your area, then contact SMMDP@nes.scot.nhs.uk with some dates and a member of the team will assist to get you booked onto an upcoming course to complete the IC Assessment.
You can also contact your local health board course leader, who can also book you onto a course to be assessed.
After initially completing your SMMDP Instructor Training, your certification is valid for four years. To effectively maintain instructor status, it is anticipated that SMMDP Instructors will participate in a minimum of 1 course per year. You will then be required to complete a Instructor Recertification assessment, which must be completed at an SMMDP course by a certified SMMDP instructor.
SMMDP will send reminders direct to faculty or advise course leaders when recertification is due. If you are due Instructor Recertification and would like to book onto an upcoming course, please check available dates for upcoming courses in your area using our Course Calendar, then contact SMMDP@nes.scot.nhs.uk and a member of the team will assist to get you booked onto an upcoming course.
You can also contact your local health board course leader, who can also book you onto a course to be recertified.
