Someone has approached me and my team about using a piece of work I have produced, they want to make some changes to it and distribute it widely themselves. What should I do?
Think about it.
NHS Scotland has traditionally been pretty relaxed about allowing its material to be shared and adapted but you’ll notice that so far we have insisted on “No Derivatives”.
Talk to those who want to adapt your material about what changes they wish to make and have a think whether if, after these changes, the work would still be one you’d be happy to see the NHS Scotland logo on.
Discuss it with colleagues and managers if you’re not sure. You can insist on any restrictions you want with regards to sharing and adaptations but don’t be too stingy either.
If you’ve made something you’re proud of which will contribute to the provision of health and social care if widely distributed and someone wants to help you do that then there’s no harm in sharing.
Do remember to get the terms on which you are allowing the sharing in writing however, and make sure any rights holders involved in your work agree too.
