The Brilliant Basics: Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE) Teaching Packs will provide a clear, accessible starting point for anyone looking to build confidence and competence in foundational HFE concepts. Developed by leading experts across healthcare, education, and safety science, these Open Access resources introduce the essential principles, methods, and language of HFE—helping to replace common misunderstandings with accurate, practical knowledge. Each pack will include a facilitator’s guide, ready‑to‑use lesson plans, and interactive learning materials designed to support educators, trainers, and practitioners in embedding HFE into everyday teaching, quality improvement, and patient safety activities. Whether you are new to HFE or enhancing existing programmes, these resources will offer a flexible, evidence‑informed way to strengthen systems thinking, support workforce wellbeing, and improve the safety and performance of healthcare environments.
 
The packs will be released in two Phases.
 
Phase One which will include the following titles:
  1. Introduction to HFE
  2. The Systems Approach
  3. Designing for People
  4. Exploring Human Work
  5. Designing Work Procedures
  6. Safety Culture.

How to access the Teaching Packs

When the Teaching Packs are made available you will be asked to confirm that you have acquired the prescribed level of Human Factors and Ergonomics knowledge and experience before you can access the packs.

There will be three options for you to choose from that will allow you to complete the ‘self-declaration’ of your knowledge and experience.

These three options include if you have:

  1. Completed or are studying a formal postgraduate Human Factors and Ergonomics qualification
  2. You have completed the Introduction to Human Factors eModule (a link to this module will be added here soon)
  3. You have completed the Foundations of Human Factors and Ergonomics for health and care professionals TURAS learning page (link coming soon)

You will soon be able to follow a link here, if you are ready to complete the self declation and start using the Teaching Packs!
