Digital Spirometry Service

The Digital Spirometry Service is for Individuals diagnosed with Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) and potentially other respiratory conditions. The workflow is designed for patients undergoing assessment and monitoring related to their lung function.

Digital Spirometry Pathway

When a patient is onboarded to the Digital Spirometry Pathway, they receive a Bluetooth-enabled spirometer. Along with the device, the patient is provided with training on how to use the spirometer effectively for their monitoring needs. This training includes an information leaflet detailing the features of the accompanying Spirobank app and troubleshooting tips to assist the patient in navigating any issues that may arise.

Next, the patient downloads the Spirobank app from either the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and completes the registration and set up process. Once completed, the patient takes their first spirometry readings using the device, typically allowing for up to three attempts to ensure accurate results, supported by in-app coaching to guide them through the process.

The Digital Spirometry Pathway continuously monitors the submitted results, triggering alerts for clinical staff if there are significant changes in the patient’s Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), particularly if there is a change of 10% or more from the baseline reading. Patients are expected to submit their spirometry readings regularly, often on a weekly basis, ensuring that their lung function is closely monitored over time.

If a patient fails to submit their readings as expected, a non-responder alert is generated for the clinician, prompting them to follow up and check on the patient’s engagement with the service. Additionally, care facility alerts are activated if the patient’s readings indicate significant declines, such as a 5% or 10% reduction in FVC, allowing for timely intervention by the clinical team.

The patient will continue in the Digital Spirometry service until they have completed their monitoring period and are no longer required to submit further readings. Upon discharge, a final PDF report summarising their readings, and any clinical outcomes will be made available for the patient’s records. This structured approach ensures that the patient receives continuous support and effective management of their respiratory health throughout their engagement with the Digital Spirometry Pathway.
