Community Training Hub Pilot Evaluation

Project background: What and Why

The Community Training Hub (CTH) Pilot Evaluation aims to assess the effectiveness, efficiency, and impact of developing a community training hub pilot designed to enhance the skills and competencies of remote, rural and Island (RRI) primary care multidisciplinary teams. The purpose of the evaluation will be to gain better understanding about the CTH pilot project, to identify what is working, and where improvements can be made. The evaluation will provide critical insights into the project’s success and areas for improvement, ensuring that future iterations to can be refined and optimised.

Evaluating the CTH pilot is crucial to ensure that the project meets its intended goals, aligns with the National Centre objectives, and delivers realistic benefits to GPs and clinical staff in remote, rural and Island (RRI) primary care.

Project description: Who and How

The evaluation involves a range of stakeholders including the four professional groups, i.e., General Practitioners, Pharmacists, Practice Nurses, and Advance Nurse Practitioners, Practice Trainers, and National Centre/NHS Education for Scotland teams. It relies on a series of key questions meant to provide a more accurate and transparent structure to highlight the main concerns of the stakeholders.

Our approach is grounded on realist principles using mixed-methods to understand the Context-Mechanism-Outcome (CMO) configuration within the CTH pilot.

Expected outcome:  When and What Difference

The CTH Evaluation process was initiated in March 2024 with a workshop that brought the stakeholders together to explore how to actively engage and share knowledge experience to support the four professional groups involved in the pilot. The evaluation will be completed in September 2025.

The main output of the evaluation will be a comparative analysis of the CTH pilot that can be used to inform the development of training hubs more widely. A detailed evaluation report outlining the evaluation process, findings and recommendations will be produced and an executive summary with concise overview of the key findings and recommendation prepared for the Scottish Government.

A presentation summarising the evaluation outcomes will be presented to key stakeholders. This evaluation will provide the necessary preliminary data required to enhance our understanding of the training hub’s effectiveness and impact as well as areas for improvement to support remote, rural and Island primary care multidisciplinary teams. It hopes to improve the hub performance, demonstrate accountability, inform decision-making, and generate new knowledge about its effectiveness and impact.
