In June 2023, NHS Education for Scotland (NES) funded a national scoping exercise (as an expression of interest) to identify where AHP preceptorship is underway, gather information for case studies and areas of good practice, whilst identifying enablers, barriers and opportunities to embedding preceptorship in the workplace.
Following a comprehensive pilot, a scoping survey tool was sent via the AHP PEL network to all managers, team leads and preceptors in November 2023. Two hundred and thirty-nine (239) responses were collected and analysed. These represented all AHP professions and all boards across Scotland.
Although most respondents had a preceptorship programme in place, the focus of this was mainly aimed at New Qualified Practitioners (NQPs). The lack of knowledge and time to organise a suitable programme, were cited as the main reason for not having preceptorship programmes in place beyond NQPs.
Respondents noted that more training around preceptorship, support for preceptors, and further resources were required to help implement preceptorship further across Scotland.
