The Women, Children, Young People and Families (WYCPF) team at NHS Education for Scotland (NES) were delighted to host a webinar on Supporting families to optimise breastmilk for preterm infants, offering an opportunity for CPD and collaborative learning.  Supporting families transitioning to or sustaining breastfeeding following an admission within a Neonatal Unit can be a complex time and requires specific knowledge and skills to ensure optimal person-centred outcomes.

This webinar aimed to:

  • Discuss the unique benefits of breastmilk to babies born sick or preterm
  • Discuss the impact positive oral touch and non-nutritive sucking has on transitioning to breastfeeding
  • Identify the key skills required to support a good milk supply and understand how to respond to challenges
  • Explain the guidance for preterm infants to support growth and nutrition
