Library of resources to aid recruitment and retention of health and care workers for remote and rural communities.

Introduction

In 2022 researchers at the University of Aberdeen carried out a project funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) that explored the experiences of remote and rural communities in trying to attract and keep healthcare staff to jobs in their areas. Recruitment and retention of health and care staff in remote and rural areas is an ongoing challenge, but much of the focus is usually on the efforts of the organisations and the health and care practitioners, and little focus has been on the experiences and efforts of the communities.

The researchers conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with community members across the UK who have been involved in designing initiatives as well as those who were recruited from such initiatives.

The tools and strategies mentioned throughout the interviews have been collated and compiled in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Aberdeen into this Living Library Toolkit. Where available, the tools and strategies have real-world examples to show their application in practice.

This Library will continue to grow as further tools are identified and data is collected on their efficacy, easy of use, practicality etc.

Details of the tools and strategies can be found in the navigation menu.

The study on which this website is based was funded by the NIHR Health and Social Care Delivery Research Programme (NIHR 133888). The views expressed are those of the authors and not necessarily those of the NIHR or the Department of Health and Social Care.
