Working with others

As an advanced level practitioner, you will be familiar with working as part of a team and collaborating with others. As a leader in healthcare your role is also to promote positive working cultures, build and lead teams, engage stakeholders, and manage people effectively.

Some examples of how this may be achieved are:

  • Raising concerns about staffing levels.
  • Acting as a role model.
  • Leading a project or audit or influencing others about an idea to improve quality of patient care.

Effective leaders adapt their leadership style as needed. There are different types of leadership styles for example autocratic, democratic, transactional and transformational. Find out more about leadership styles and why it matters here.

This article on dialogic leadership explores how in any conversation, some people move - they initiate ideas. Other people follow - they complete what is said and support what is happening. Still others oppose - they challenge what is being said. And others by stand -they provide perspective on what is happening.

Providing feedback is also an important element and as a leader you have a role in promoting a positive and supportive feedback culture. MindTools have a collection of different feedback resources and links to different models of feedback you can use.
