This learning bite will introduce you to the mechanisms of COVID-19 illness and common terminology used when defining post-COVID illness.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this learning bite, you will be able to:

  • Define the virus that causes COVID-19 illness.
  • Describe how the virus enters the body.
  • Identify how the virus replicates within the body.
  • Explain why COVID-19 causes widespread symptoms across many different bodily systems.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of common terminology used concerning persistent post COVID symptoms, including long COVID. 
  • Illustrate an awareness of the current World Health Organisation (WHO) clinical case definition of post COVID conditions. 
  • Know where to access further information in current NICE and SIGN clinical guidelines for long COVID.
