In this section of the toolkit, you will find information on the NES Nursing Midwifery and Allied Health Professions (NMAHP) development framework and how it can be used to support advanced practice development.
The development framework can be used to:
The development needs assessment tool (DNAT) can be used to reflect on your current role, identify where you might benefit from further training, education and development and as a way of measuring your progression and ongoing learning needs. The tool is based on the four pillars of practice.
The case study below demonstrates how the NMAHP Development Framework and DNAT can be used in practice.
Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) based in primary care
Susan is an advanced nurse practitioner (ANP) in a busy rural GP practice. She had been a practice nurse for 11 years before becoming an advanced nurse practitioner. Susan had completed multiple diplomas in the care of patients with conditions such as asthma, diabetes and heart failure amongst others. Using the NMAHP development framework and development needs analysis tool, Susan identified her learning needs and the skills which would be beneficial for her to develop for the future. She realised that a prescribing qualification would benefit service users and save her time in waiting for prescriptions from a GP. Following on from successful completion of the Non-Medical Prescribing course Susan has gone on to complete the Advanced Clinical Examination and Clinical Diagnosis qualifications, resulting in Susan being awarded a Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Practice. Susan also used the DNAT to demonstrate evidence of her development to support appraisal discussion and for revalidation purposes.
