Advanced Nursing Practice (Clinical)

As detailed in Chief Nursing Officer Directorate Paper 2 (2017) and 8 (2018), there are two main advanced level practice roles within nursing the Advanced Nurse Practitioner (generalist) and the Advanced Clinical Nurse Specialist (specialist).

The underpinning principles of advanced practice are:

  • Autonomous practice
  • Critical thinking
  • High levels of decision making and problem solving
  • Values based care
  • Improving practice

To support you to identify the key knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to support your practice within the clinical pillar you may find the development needs analysis tool (DNAT) found in the Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals (NMAHP) Development Framework helpful.

  • This Development Analysis Tool (DNAT) is designed to help you reflect on your current job role and to identify areas where you may benefit from further training, education and development to enhance or develop your role.
