This learning site provides resources relevant to public protection to support all members of the Scottish health workforce.

Welcome to the Public Protection learning site on Turas Learn

Public protection is everyone’s business and everyone’s responsibility. Every member of the workforce in Scotland has a role to play in understanding and responding to people who are being harmed or may be at risk of harm.  Public protection is a term referring to the prevention of harm which can include, for example, child protection; adult support and protection; violence against women and girls; and alcohol, drugs and other substance use.

Learning resources will continue to be added to this learning site.

Adult Support and Protection

Adult Support and Protection is integral to the protection of human rights. Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms which we are all entitled to live with dignity, equality and fairness.

Protection matters because it means protecting people’s right to live in safety, free from harm and any form of physical or emotional abuse or neglect is unacceptable. If you thought a child was at risk of harm, you'd do something about it, and it should be no different for an adult.

The overall aim of the adult support and protection practice level 1 (informed) module is to give you the information you will need to ensure the protection and wellbeing of adults at risk of harm.  It will also highlight what to do should you become concerned that an adult is being harmed or at risk of harm. The practice level 1 module is for all members of the health workforce, whether employed or volunteers.

The overall aim of the adult support and protection practice level 2 (skilled) module is to support you in recognising adults at risk of harm and the processes involved in adult support and protection. The practice level 2 module is for staff who, within their role, have direct and/or substantial contact with adults.

Child Protection

Children in Scotland have the right to be cared for and protected from harm and grow up in a safe environment in which their rights and needs are respected. We all have a duty, individually and collectively, to protect children in our communities.

The overall aim of the child protection practice level 1 (informed) module is to give you the information you will need to promote the protection and wellbeing of children. It will also highlight what to do should you become concerned that a child is being, or at risk of being harmed. The practice level 1 module is for all members of the health workforce, whether employed or volunteers.

The overall aim of the child protection practice level 2 (skilled) module is to support you when you are working with children and their families in recognising your role in child protection in a multi-agency context. The practice level 2 module is for staff who, within their role, have direct and/or substantial contact with children and young people, parents and carers.

Responding to a disclosure of rape or sexual assault

Rape and sexual assault are forms of Gender-Based violence and this module is relevant for healthcare professionals working in Scotland, and any other healthcare related role which may receive a disclosure or rape or sexual assault.

By completing this module, you are not expected to deliver specialist services for people who have experienced rape and/or sexual assault. The purpose of the module is to help you respond sensitively to disclosures of rape and/or sexual assault and how to help someone access the most appropriate support, in particular their local Sexual Assault Response Coordination Service, which is also known as SARCS.

It will help you to understand national guidance by providing information on how to respond and provide appropriate support following disclosure. You can access the national guidance by selecting this link.
