This video has been developed to provide information on, and raise awareness of, the role of a Sexual Offences Examiner (SOE) in Scotland. SOEs undertake forensic medical examinations (FMEs) for people who have experienced rape or sexual assault.
All of the doctors in the video are SOEs, although some reference the fact that they have a wider role such as a Speciality Doctor or Forensic Physician. Their role as a SOE is included within that title, depending on the health board they work in.
Titles such as Police Doctor, Forensic Medical Examiner and Police Surgeon are not routinely used anymore.
The facilities that these examinations are provided at are known as SARCS – Sexual Assault Response Coordination Services.
If you would like to find out more about a potential career as a SOE, please contact nss.sarcs@nhs.scot.
