It’s generally agreed that education and training in Human Factors will greatly contribute to improving safety and wellbeing in healthcare. However, there have been widespread misunderstandings about Human Factors. The biggest problem has been a conflation of this scientific discipline with a behaviourist approach to patient safety (for example, non-technical skills (NTS) and/or Crew Resource Management. Whilst training for communication skills, teamwork and situation awareness is highly important and very useful but are not truly representative of the Human Factors systems and design approach. In this Brief, Twelve Tips have been proposed to inform the development, content, and delivery of Human Factors for care education and training at all levels.
