What are the programme aims?

The aim of the programme is to support NHS Boards by accelerating the formative development and assessment of Anaesthetic Practitioners in NHS Scotland over a 26-week period.

How does the programme work?

The programme consists of eight one day workshops which include emergencies, advanced airway management, obstetrics, and paediatrics. These workshops will use a blended learning approach and simulation to focus on 17 high impact but low exposure competencies. This will enable the rehearsal of skills in a safe environment, allowing NHS Boards to focus on the more traditional work-based learning delivery for the remaining  Refreshed Core Competencies for Anaesthetic Practitioners.

Workshops

The workshops will be delivered by multi-professional faculties with specific expertise relating to the individual workshop topic, supported by the NHS Scotland Academy (NHSSA). In order to optimise the learning experiences, skill acquisition and training time on the workshops, participants will be expected to prepare for each workshop. Online resources which support pre and post workshop learning will be hosted via Turas learn.

The initial workshop sessions develop core skills and principles, with a focus on communication and human factors required by the Anaesthetic Assistant. These core skills are notably spiralled throughout each of the additional workshops. Following a period of consolidation within the workplace, core skills are then built upon and progressively added to throughout the workshop programme by developing knowledge and skills for more specific and challenging areas of practice.
