Designing for Patient Safety

In this report by the UK Design Council and Department of Health, it is demonstrated how effective design thinking, when applied to healthcare, can deliver products services, processes and environments that are intuitive, simple to understand, simple to use, convenient, comfortable and consequently less likely to lead to accidental misuse, error and accidents.
By contrast, confusing, complex and unwieldy designs - which are all too often present in healthcare - are, at best, less effective than they could be. At worst they are potentially dangerous to either healthcare staff or the patient - or both.

This report sets out a perspective from the world of design based on a scoping study carried out by a research team from the Universities of Cambridge and Surrey and the Royal College of Art to identify previously unrecognised opportunities for improved patient safety in the NHS.
