General learning providers

Training workshops organised by Public Health Scotland (PHS) Workforce Development Team. Topics include: Excel VBA, machine learning - standardisation, data science - storytelling, data conversations, data visualisations, principles of information design, effective communication, understanding information requests and Freedom of Information requests, Business Objects, introduction to R and R Tidyverse. No charge for PHS staff but a daily delegate charge may be applied for non-PHS staff who attend. Contact phs.staffdevelopment@nhs.net to enquire about non-PHS places.
 

Provides face to face training including software development, web development and a full time Data Analysis course that is available in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. This course is aimed at beginners, takes 14 weeks and costs £6,250. The organisation also provides virtual learning.
 

Coursera is an online learning site. All courses are taught by top instructors from world-class universities and companies. Hundreds of free courses give you access to on-demand video lectures, homework exercises, and community discussion forums. Paid courses provide additional quizzes and projects as well as a shareable Course Certificate upon completion. Courses range from beginner to advanced level. Some of the subjects covered include: Data Science in Stratified Healthcare and Precision Medicine, Machine Learning, Data Analysis, Probability and Statistics, Data Management, Networking, Security, Software Development, Algorithims.
 

Futurelearn offer a diverse selection of courses from leading universities and cultural institutions from around the world. These are delivered one step at a time, and are accessible on mobile, tablet and desktop, so you can fit learning around your life.
 

Jumping Rivers is a leading analytics company specialising in data science. Provides guidance and consultancy as well as virtual and face-to-face training on all aspects of data science and machine learning. Based in Newcastle with consultants covering Scotland, their trainers and consultants come with over 40 years combined experience in R, Python, Stan, Scala and other programming languages. Fees apply which are based on request.
 

This provider runs several taught courses, online learning and mentoring opportunities in Scotland including an Executive Education Programme – which covers Data and Artificial Intelligence and a Data Scientist design thinking course. Data Lab provide mentoring and coaching through specific projects - e.g. Data Science Accelerator Programme. The courses are mainly free but upgrades can be bought for an additional fee.
 

The SCVO Provides several face-to-face training/learning opportunities, with some scope for network learning and continuous development, and mentoring. Training includes its Digital Champion training which aims to empower citizens and the general workforce with digital skills. Includes a number of data and information aspects. Focuses on 5 Essential Digital Skills: transacting, communicating, problem solving, handling information and staying safe and legal. Its evolution learning programme supports organisations to become digitally enabled.Training opportunities are open to all. The training is not specifically aimed at healthcare staff but can be tailored. Training must be arranged with SCVO.
 

The Government Statistical Service (GSS) provides a mixture of face to face and online training courses. Several courses are delivered only in England but some are flexible as to location. The provider also gives access to workshops, webinars, and online learning via data camp. The majority of these are only available to GSS/civil service staff. Training is provided by several organisations including the Office for National Statistics, GSS Learning Academy, GSS Quality Centre.
 

The Open University provides a wide range of relevant online courses via its Open Learn platform including: coding for data analysis, effective ways of displaying information, Data Visualisation, Designing the user interface, Artificial intelligence, Information literacy, Data management, Invention and innovation, Design thinking/person-centered design. Much of the content is free without restrictions. Much of the content is rated based on how much prior experience of a subject is required before starting the course. Course levels vary between beginner, intermediate and advanced.

Tableau training offers useful content for those doing deep data preparation and analysis and those responsible for creating content for others. For users of Tableau Prep and Tableau Desktop. Learn how to prepare, analyse, and share your data. Current Courses include: getting started, visual analytics, dashboards and stories, mapping and more.
 

Google offers a variety of free online digital and technology learning courses at beginner, intermediate and advanced level. Topics include: coding, online security, machine learning. Using the website you can also access training from other providers. Courses are free but require a Google account.
 

Google Analytics Academy offers a range of free courses that help you learn about Google's measurement tools so that you can gain intelligent data collection and analysis.Different skill levels exist from beginner, to adavanced, to 'power user'.
 

This company offers a mixture of free and paid for online learning courses. Subjects include Microsoft Excel for data analysis, pivot tables, SQL. Courses are open to all.
 

Provider of fee-based online learning courses including courses on: Python, R, Machine Learning. Material is not specifically targeted at health care staff. Registration is paid-for only but fees are relatively low.

Some of these are free including an introduction to R. Also include intermediate R and advanced courses. The courses are not specifically aimed at healthcare staff. There are no restrictions on access. Some content is free but there is a cost for full access.
 

Offers workshops, "Carpentries" which are training events teaching computing and data skills to researchers across all disciplines, allowing them to undertake computational or data-intensive research that they wouldn’t be able to do otherwise. Most research areas don’t teach these skills as part of basic research training, but they are essential for much of the research work being done today. Can provide advice on publicity and all aspects of organising and hosting a workshop, as well as instructor training.
 

The Scottish Digital Academy’s purpose is to transform the way government designs services for its users. The Scottish Digital Academy was set up in collaboration with GDS Academy. Courses are currently quarterly and face-to-face. Subjects include: Agile, Artificial Intelligence, user-centered design, working level. There are different courss for different staff types e.g. managers, business analysts. The courses are aimed at public sector workers. Check website for more information.
