Introduction

The Healthy Beginnings: MAP of Health Behaviour Change Learning Programme has been designed specifically for practitioners working in Early Years services in Scotland.  The programme introduces a person-centred, evidence-based approach to enhance the provision of health behaviour change support for parents and carers of children..The training aims to increase practitioners' confidence to notice opportunities for change, to start a conversation with families about these opportunities and to provide effective behaviour change support.

Programme Structure

Learner Pathway

This learning programme consists of 3 parts:

  • eLearning Module
    • Completion of the MAP eLearning content (approx. 1 hour)
       
  • Online Workshop - Session 1
    • Pre-learning consisting of narrated slides and reflective activities (1 hour 45 minutes)
    • Attendance at first online skills-based workshop (4 hours)
       
  • Online Workshop – Session 2
    • Pre-learning consisting of narrated slides and reflective activities (1 hour)
    • Attendance at the second online skills-based workshop (4 hours)

 

  • Total learning time required - 11 hours
Learning Outcomes

By the end of the learning programme, practitioners from Early Years services will be able to: 

  • Demonstrate increased knowledge and confidence in raising the issue of child healthy weight and contributory factors (e.g. activity levels, oral health, diet) 
     
  • Structure a behaviour change conversation with parents/carers around the issue of healthy lifestyles according to the MAP model 
     
  • Use behaviour change techniques to support parents/carers and children to make changes that support healthy lifestyles 
     
  • Tailor their responses and the behaviour change techniques used to suit the family’s context
     
  • Apply the MAP approach to their own behaviour in relation to implementing the knowledge and skills gained from the Healthy Beginnings MAP of Behaviour Change Learning Programme into their daily practice
