Launch of the new clinical pathways for reporting cases of adults and children who have experienced rape and sexual assault

The Chief Medical Officer’s Taskforce was established in 2017 to improve healthcare and forensic medical examination services and the vision of the CMO Taskforce is to provide consistent, person centered, trauma informed health care and forensic medical services and access to recovery, for anyone who has experienced rape, sexual assault or child sexual abuse in Scotland.

A package of resources has been developed in collaboration with key agencies including health, justice, social work, and the third sector partners, to ensure a robust national approach to the provision of healthcare and forensic medical services, as well as the recording, collation and reporting of performance data in relation to these services.

This package includes Scotland’s first national clinical pathway for adults - as well as for children and young people - who present following rape, sexual assault or child sexual abuse.   The clinical pathways describe the care and treatment that someone should receive following rape, sexual assault or child sexual abuse, including the steps that should be followed by the clinician undertaking the examination and the necessary ongoing and follow up care.

The clinical pathways, along with the supporting documentation have been published on the CMO Taskforce website and can be assessed here. Other key documents included in the package of resources will be available locally within each health board area. For further information, please contact your health board nominated lead.
