Peer review in Sexual Offences

Add to favourites

There is an expectation by professional bodies, the courts and the GMC that peer review is undertaken as part of good medical practice¹.

The peer review process in sexual offences involving both adults and children provides a supportive environment to discuss cases, share knowledge and expertise. It also enables doctors and nurses, particularly those working in remote communities and seeing infrequent cases, to keep up to date and develop a peer network for ongoing support and CPD.

The following documents outline the principles, terms of reference and processes of peer review.

It should be noted that remote sharing of intimate images during the peer review process must be undertaken in accordance with data protection guidance. Agreement from local IT departments should be sought to ensure local systems support the sharing of intimate images. It cannot be assumed that systems that are suitable for sharing of non-intimate patient information are compliant.
