An Introduction to Behavioural Activation for Adults with Depression
BA Basics

‘Behavioural Activation Basics’ provides you with an introduction to Behavioural Activation for Depression. It is also the first part of the 3 Behavioural Activation for Depression learning programmes and aims to help you gain the requisite knowledge underpinning the application of Behaviourism in the treatment of depression. Randomised control trials have shown BA to be an effective intervention in the following situations:

  • Adults with all forms of depression
  • Older people with depression
  • Mothers with post-natal depression
  • Inpatient settings
  • Community settings
  • Depression associated with illicit drug use
  • Depression associated with obesity
  • Depression associated with cancer

This learning material has been developed for qualified multi-disciplinary staff that work with people who have depression.

By the end of the module, you will:

  1. Have a clear picture of what BA is and when to use it
  2. Understand how patterns of behaviour influence depression

If you find the subject interesting enough to pursue it further and would like to develop clinical skills in this area, please apply for the Behavioural Activation Learning Programme. This will give you access to the ‘Behavioural Activation for Depression’ training provided within the local NHS boards, and the digital learning resources for clinicians to support their delivery of Behavioural Activation.
