Morbidity and mortality from liver disease has been rising exponentially for decades in the UK and in particular in the West of Scotland. Causes include awareness of liver disease and its complications and timely treatment of acute presentation. The British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) and British Association of the Study of the Liver (BASL) introduced a list of tests to be initiated within the first 6 hours of a patient admitted with decompensated liver disease
