Admission to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit carries a psychological burden for children and their families which can significantly impact their well being and potentially cause harm. In PICU our aim is to foster a patient and family-centered approach which must include promoting emotional well being and psychological safety. Typically families are ill-prepared for the potential psychological trauma associated with a PICU admission and hence may not be well equipped to manage this. Providing adequate information, signposting to support and offering prompt access to psychological services should improve this aspect of safety for our families. AIM: to improve the psychological support and access to appropriate psychological services provided to children and families during and after their stay in PICU.
