Measurement

Measurement and data are required throughout the improvement journey to understand your current system and whether your suggested changes have resulted in improvement.

Measurement resources

There is information and guidance on displaying your data to support your improvement work which can be found on the quality improvement zone.

Measurment

The quality improvement zone includes information, resources, quality improvement tools and eLearning modules on:

  • Introduction to measurement for improvement
  • Understanding Variation
  • Developing your measures
  • Data Collection
  • Presenting Data

The eLearning module measurement for improvement will help you to identify what to measure, what data to collect, how to interpret the data and tell your quality improvement story.

This will support your quality improvement project and will provide evidence of whether your change ideas have led to an improvement and what are the lessons learned.

Measurement Tools

There are several different tools for measuring improvement and displaying data. These can be found on the quality improvement zone.

A run chart is a line graph of data plotted over time. By collecting and charting data over time, you can find trends or patterns in the process.

This example of a run chart illustrates the days between PVC associated staphylococcus aureus (SAB) infections in a ward and the impact following 3 PDSA cycles.

Run chart example

By displaying your data in a run chart and applying the run chart rules this will allow you to understand whether your tests of change are leading to improvement and whether it is sustained.
