HIV transmission Elimination

Add to favourites

The elimination of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission in the UK is now considered to be an achievable ambition. To achieve this all individuals living with undiagnosed HIV will need to be offered testing and commenced on antiretroviral therapy (ART) (British HIV Association, 2020).

NHS Education for Scotland and Public Health Scotland have developed a suite of learning resources to help support healthcare practitioners to:

  • consider HIV testing for patients in their area of practice
  • to work in a person-centered, anti-discriminatory way with people who may be living with, or be at risk of, HIV.

By working through these resources, you should have an appreciation of the symptoms and common presentations of HIV infection. This should equip you to recognise patients who may have HIV infection and allow you to offer testing.
