Rationale - Emergency laparotomy is a procedure that carries with it a great deal of morbidity and mortality, higher than many other procedures considered to be high-risk, such as coronary artery bypass grafting or abdominal aortic aneurysm repair. In addition, patients presenting for emergency laparotomy are often elderly – with significant comorbidities and physiological disturbances as a consequence of their presenting pathology.
