The Need for Change: Over the next 10 years the proportion of over 75s in Scotland’s population will increase by over 25%. By 2033 the number of people over 75 is likely to have increased by almost 60% (Scottish Government 2012). In addition within acute medical settings Healthcare Acquired Infection (HAI) continues to represent a considerable threat to patient safety and impact on patient flow within the system (Health Protection Scotland 2013). Aim: To test alternative approaches to shorten patients length of stay (LOS) and develop an understanding of patient flow and the system within St Johns Hospital (SJH), West Lothian, part of NHS Lothian.
