Aim: Through testing various components of an Enhanced Recovery (ERAS) pathway, the team aimed to reduce postoperative length of stay (LoS) for specific gynaecological procedures. Enhanced Recovery aims to improve the quality of care provided to patients who undergo major surgery. By improving the quality in care it is also assumed that hospital stay will become more efficient, thereby allowing hospital services to realise the benefits of the pathway, through savings in bed days. A key component of this project would be increasing the daycase rate for procedures traditionally deemed as major inpatient surgery.
